Edward James Roye, born on February third, eighteen fifteen, was a prominent figure in Liberia's political landscape. He made his mark as a merchant before ascending to the highest office in the nation, serving as the fifth president of Liberia from eighteen seventy until his overthrow in the coup d'état of eighteen seventy-one.
Prior to his presidency, Roye held the esteemed position of the fourth Chief Justice of Liberia from eighteen sixty-five to eighteen sixty-eight. His legal expertise and commitment to justice laid a strong foundation for his political career.
Roye was a member of the True Whig Party, becoming the first from this political group to serve as president. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, ultimately leading to his untimely death following his removal from power.
