Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden, born on June 21, 1983, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is a prominent figure known for his role as a whistleblower and former intelligence contractor. His journey began with a brief stint in community college, followed by an attempt to pursue a master's program at the University of Liverpool, which he did not complete. In 2006, he embarked on a career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), later transitioning to Dell in 2009, where he managed computer systems for the National Security Agency (NSA).

In 2013, Snowden's life took a dramatic turn when he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton for two months, during which he gathered classified NSA documents. In May of that year, he flew to Hong Kong and, in early June, disclosed thousands of these documents to journalists, revealing extensive global surveillance programs operated by the NSA and the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. His revelations ignited a worldwide debate on the balance between national security and individual privacy.

Following his disclosures, the U.S. Department of Justice charged Snowden with violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and theft of government property. His passport was revoked, leading him to seek refuge in Moscow, where he initially stayed at Sheremetyevo International Airport for a month before being granted asylum. In 2022, he became a naturalized citizen of Russia.

In addition to his activism, Snowden took on the role of president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation in early 2016, advocating for the protection of journalists against hacking and government surveillance. He married Lindsay Mills in 2017, and his memoir, 'Permanent Record,' was published on September 17, 2019. Notably, a U.S. federal court ruled in 2020 that one of the mass surveillance programs he exposed was illegal and potentially unconstitutional.
