Edwin Howard Armstrong

Edwin Howard Armstrong, born on December eighteenth, nineteen hundred, was a pioneering American electrical engineer, inventor, and physicist renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to radio technology. He is best known for developing frequency modulation (FM) radio and the superheterodyne receiver system, innovations that transformed the landscape of communication.

Throughout his illustrious career, Armstrong was awarded forty-two patents and received numerous accolades, including the inaugural Medal of Honor from the Institute of Radio Engineers, now known as IEEE, and the prestigious French Legion of Honor. His achievements were further recognized with the Franklin Medal in nineteen forty-one and the Edison Medal in nineteen forty-two. During World War I, he served as a major in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, earning him the enduring title of 'Major Armstrong.'

Armstrong's academic journey began at Columbia University, where he not only studied but also dedicated much of his life to teaching as a professor. His legacy was solidified with his induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the International Telecommunication Union's roster of great inventors. In two thousand one, he was posthumously inducted into the Wireless Hall of Fame.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Armstrong faced significant challenges, particularly in his legal battles against contemporaries Lee de Forest and David Sarnoff, which took a toll on his health and finances. These struggles contributed to a breakdown in his marriage, culminating in his tragic suicide in nineteen fifty-four. Following his death, his widow, Marion, continued to fight for justice, successfully pursuing several legal cases on behalf of his estate.
