Edwin Hubble

Edwin Hubble, born on November 20, 1889, was a pioneering American astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist whose contributions fundamentally transformed our understanding of the universe. He played a pivotal role in establishing extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology, proving that many celestial objects previously classified as 'nebulae' were, in fact, galaxies beyond our own Milky Way.

Utilizing the groundbreaking work of Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Hubble employed the relationship between a Cepheid variable's luminosity and its pulsation period to measure galactic and extragalactic distances. In 1929, Hubble confirmed a significant discovery: the recessional velocity of galaxies increases with their distance from Earth, a phenomenon now known as Hubble's law. Although initially proposed by Georges Lemaître, Hubble's validation of this principle implied that the universe is expanding, reshaping the field of cosmology.

Hubble's legacy is immortalized in the Hubble Space Telescope, named in his honor, which continues to provide invaluable insights into the cosmos. A model of this iconic telescope is prominently displayed in his hometown of Marshfield, Missouri, serving as a testament to his enduring impact on astronomy.
