Egerton Ryerson

Egerton Ryerson, born on March twenty-fourth, eighteen hundred and three, was a pivotal figure in Canadian education and politics. As a Methodist minister, educator, and administrator, he played a crucial role in shaping the Ontario public school system. His advocacy for free public education and opposition to the control of Upper Canada by the Anglican elite marked him as a progressive voice of his time.

Ryerson's commitment to education was evident in his tenure as Chief Superintendent of Education for Upper Canada, a position he assumed in eighteen forty-four. Under his leadership, significant reforms were introduced, including the establishment of school boards and the standardization of textbooks. He became the founding editor of The Christian Guardian and the first principal of Victoria College.
