Ehmedê Xanî

Ehmedê Xanî, born in the Hakkâri region in 1650, was a prominent Kurdish intellectual, scholar, mystic, and poet. His contributions to literature and philosophy have left an indelible mark on Kurdish culture, and he is often regarded as a foundational figure in the development of Kurdish nationalism.

Among his most celebrated works is the epic poem Mem and Zin, which is frequently hailed as the Kurdish national epic. This romantic narrative not only resonates deeply with Kurdish identity but has also garnered appreciation from non-Kurdish audiences, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Kurdish literature.

Xanî's literary prowess extended beyond Mem and Zin; he also authored Nûbihara Biçûkan, a versified Arabic-Kurdish vocabulary, and Eqîdeya Îmanê, a religious poem. These works were integral to Kurdish education, remaining in the curriculum of schools until the 1930s.

Admired by his contemporaries, Xanî drew inspiration from notable Kurmanji poets such as Melayê Cizîrî and Feqiyê Teyran. His legacy is often described as a spiritual continuation of their poetic traditions, as noted by scholar Joyce Blau, who referred to him as the spiritual son of these literary giants.
