Ehud Olmert

Ehud Olmert, born on September thirtieth, nineteen forty-five, is a prominent Israeli politician and lawyer who held the office of Prime Minister of Israel from two thousand six to two thousand nine. His political journey began at the young age of twenty-eight when he was first elected to the Knesset representing the Likud party in nineteen seventy-three. Over the years, he held various significant positions, including Minister of Health from nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety-two and Minister without portfolio from nineteen eighty-eight to nineteen ninety.

In nineteen ninety-three, Olmert was elected Mayor of Jerusalem, where he served two consecutive five-year terms. He returned to national politics in two thousand three, taking on roles such as Designated Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Trade, and Minister of Communications. Following the resignation of Benjamin Netanyahu, he also briefly served as acting Minister of Finance from two thousand five to two thousand six.

In late two thousand five, Olmert played a pivotal role in the formation of the Kadima party alongside Ariel Sharon and other politicians from Likud and the Labor Party. After Sharon's incapacitation due to a stroke, Olmert became the acting Prime Minister in January two thousand six and subsequently succeeded Sharon as the leader of Kadima, forming a government after the elections in March of that year. His tenure was marked by the tumultuous 2006 Lebanon War, which ended without a clear resolution and led to a significant decline in his approval ratings.

Despite engaging in multiple peace talks with the Palestinians, including the Annapolis Conference in two thousand seven, Olmert's leadership faced increasing scrutiny. He resigned in two thousand eight amid low approval ratings and an ongoing corruption investigation. He remained in office until March two thousand nine, when he was succeeded by Benjamin Netanyahu. Following his departure from politics, Olmert was sentenced to six years in prison in two thousand fourteen for bribery and obstruction of justice, although he was released on parole in July two thousand seventeen.
