He served as the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) from two thousand four to two thousand fourteen, where he was instrumental in promoting intercultural dialogue and reforming the organization to enhance its effectiveness.

İhsanoğlu's academic journey began at Ain Shams University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in nineteen sixty-six. He continued his studies in Cairo, obtaining a Master of Science from Al-Azhar University in nineteen seventy, followed by a PhD from Ankara University in nineteen seventy-four. His research primarily focuses on the history of scientific endeavors within the Islamic world, the interplay between science and religion, and the cultural exchanges between Islam and the West.

In addition to his academic achievements, İhsanoğlu founded the Department of History of Science at Istanbul University, serving as its chairman from nineteen eighty-four to two thousand three. He has held teaching positions at various prestigious institutions, including Ankara University, the University of Exeter, Inönü University, and LMU Munich.
