Ekrem İmamoğlu, born on June third, nineteen seventy-one, in Akçaabat, Turkey, is a prominent politician and businessperson who has made significant strides in Turkish politics. He moved to Istanbul in nineteen eighty-seven, where he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in business administration and a Master's degree in human resource management from Istanbul University. İmamoğlu began his career in his family's construction and real estate business, later becoming a board member of the multi-sport club Trabzonspor in two thousand two.
Joining the Republican People's Party (CHP) in two thousand eight, İmamoğlu quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the president of the party's local chapter in Beylikdüzü. His political career took off when he was elected as the mayor of Beylikdüzü in two thousand fourteen. In March two thousand nineteen, he achieved a remarkable victory against the ruling AK Party-backed candidate Binali Yıldırım to become the thirty-second Mayor of Istanbul. Despite facing challenges, including the annulment of the election, İmamoğlu was reelected later that year.
During his tenure, İmamoğlu implemented various initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for Istanbul's residents. He tackled child malnutrition by enhancing access to milk from local dairy farmers, provided scholarships for tertiary education, and reduced public transportation fares for certain residents. His environmental efforts included cleaning the Golden Horn and replacing traditional phaetons with all-electric vehicles on the Princes' Islands. He also oversaw the expansion of the city's public transport network and the restoration of the Esenler Coach Terminal.
In two thousand twenty-four, İmamoğlu was reelected for a second term as Mayor of Istanbul and emerged as a leading candidate for the upcoming presidential election in two thousand twenty-eight. However, on March twenty-third, two thousand twenty-five, he faced a significant setback when he was suspended from office and arrested amid allegations of corruption and other charges. Despite these challenges, he has continued to advocate for his political beliefs from prison, facing numerous legal battles and ongoing trials.
