Eleanor A. Garatti, born on June 12, 1909, was a remarkable American swimmer who made her mark in the world of competitive swimming during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Known for her exceptional talent, she represented the San Rafael and Western Women's Swim Clubs, showcasing her skills in various freestyle events.
Garatti's athletic prowess earned her a place in Olympic history as she became a gold medalist in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at both the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games. Her achievements extended beyond the Olympics, as she also held world records in sprint freestyle events, solidifying her status as one of the leading swimmers of her time.
A proud graduate of San Rafael High, Eleanor was not only an athlete but also a community advocate. She played a pivotal role in establishing Marin County's first Red Cross Swimming program, demonstrating her commitment to promoting swimming and water safety.
In June 1930, Eleanor married Lawrence Saville, a construction engineer, and subsequently moved to San Francisco. Her legacy as a swimmer and community leader continued to inspire many until her passing on September 9, 1998.
