Elena Poniatowska

Elena Poniatowska, born on May 19, 1932, in Paris, is a distinguished French-born Mexican journalist and author. She hails from an upper-class family, with her mother's lineage having fled Mexico during the tumultuous Mexican Revolution. At the tender age of ten, she relocated to Mexico to escape the impending dangers of World War II, a move that would shape her future as a prominent voice in literature and journalism.

Her career began at eighteen when she started writing for the newspaper Excélsior, where she focused on interviews and society columns. Despite the challenges faced by women in the media from the 1950s to the 1970s, Poniatowska carved out a niche for herself, addressing pressing social and political issues through both fiction and nonfiction. Her fearless writing style and commitment to the disenfranchised, particularly women and the impoverished, have earned her a revered place in Mexican literature.

Among her most notable works is 'La noche de Tlatelolco: Testimonios de historia oral' (The Night of Tlatelolco: Testimonies of Oral History), which chronicles the tragic events of the 1968 student protests in Mexico City. This seminal work, translated into English as 'Massacre in Mexico,' showcases her dedication to documenting the struggles of the marginalized. Due to her leftist perspectives, she has affectionately been dubbed 'the Red Princess' and is celebrated as 'Mexico's grande dame of letters.'
