Elia Kazan

Elia Kazan, born Elias Kazantzoglou on September 7, 1909, in Constantinople, was a Greek-American film and theatre director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. His family immigrated to the United States in 1913, where he would later carve out a significant place in the annals of American cinema and theatre. After studying at Williams College and the Yale School of Drama, Kazan began his professional acting career, which spanned eight years before he joined the Group Theatre in 1932. In 1947, he co-founded the Actors Studio, which became a pivotal institution in the development of Method Acting under the guidance of Lee Strasberg.

Kazan's directorial career was marked by a series of influential films that tackled pressing social issues. His first major work, Gentleman's Agreement (1947), addressed antisemitism in America and garnered eight Oscar nominations, winning three, including Best Director for Kazan. He continued to explore themes of racial prejudice in Pinky (1949) and showcased the complexities of human relationships in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), which received twelve Oscar nominations and won four. His collaboration with Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront (1954) further solidified his reputation, as the film also received twelve nominations and won eight Oscars.
