Elia Millosevich

Elia Millosevich, born on September fifth, eighteen forty-eight, was a distinguished Italian astronomer renowned for his expertise in calculating the orbits of comets and asteroids, particularly the notable asteroid 433 Eros.

His academic journey began at the University of Padua, where his early research on the upcoming transits of Venus in eighteen seventy-four and eighteen eighty-two garnered significant attention. This recognition led to his appointment as a professor of nautical astronomy at the Reale Istituto di Marina Mercantile a Venezia, the Venice Royal Institute of the Merchant Navy.

In eighteen seventy-nine, Millosevich took on the role of deputy director at the Osservatorio del Collegio Romano, which was affiliated with the Ufficio Centrale di Meteorologia in Rome. Following the resignation of Pietro Tacchini in nineteen hundred and two, he ascended to the position of director, a role he held until his passing.

His contributions to astronomy were celebrated with multiple accolades, including the Prize for Astronomy from the Italian Accademia dei Lincei in eighteen ninety-eight and nineteen hundred and four for his work on Eros. In nineteen eleven, he received the prestigious Pontécoulant Prize from the French Académie des sciences de Paris. Over his lifetime, Millosevich published more than four hundred and fifty works, alongside numerous observations of planets and comets.

In recognition of his legacy, the main-belt asteroid 69961 Millosevich was named in his honor in two thousand four, a tribute to his lasting impact on the field of astronomy.
