Elijah Samuel Burke, born on May 24, 1978, is a prominent American professional wrestler, widely recognized by his ring name, "Da Pope." His journey in the world of wrestling began in 2003, when he made his debut in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), initially competing in their developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). Burke's tenure in WWE spanned from 2006 to 2008, during which he showcased his talents not only as a wrestler but also as a commentator, particularly as a member of The New Breed stable. Notably, he faced off against Chris Benoit in what would be Benoit's final match.
After his time in WWE, Burke transitioned to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, now known as Impact Wrestling, where he had two significant stints. His first run lasted from 2009 to 2013, where he wrestled under the name D'Angelo Dinero. He returned to the promotion from 2015 to 2017, this time taking on the role of a television commentator. Throughout his wrestling career, Burke has achieved considerable success, including winning the OVW Heavyweight Championship, OVW Television Championship, and OVW Southern Tag Team Championship. In 2010, he was honored as the Most Improved Wrestler of the Year by Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
Before embarking on his wrestling career, Burke served as a law enforcement officer in Jacksonville, Florida. He was dual certified and earned a degree in criminal justice, which provided him with a unique perspective that he later incorporated into his wrestling persona. Additionally, Burke's background as an amateur boxer and toughman competitor significantly influenced his in-ring style, allowing him to blend athleticism with a gritty toughness.
In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Burke was inducted into the Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014 at The Jacksonville Veterans Coliseum. His multifaceted career, both inside and outside the ring, has made him a respected figure in the wrestling community.
