Elijah McCoy

Elijah J. McCoy, born on May 2, 1844, was a pioneering Canadian-American engineer renowned for his innovative contributions to steam engine lubrication systems. His journey began on the Ontario shore of Lake Erie, where he was born free to parents who had escaped enslavement in Kentucky. In 1847, his family relocated to the United States, where they became U.S. residents and citizens.

Throughout his life, McCoy's ingenuity and dedication to engineering led to significant advancements in the efficiency of steam engines. His inventions not only improved the performance of these machines but also set a standard for future innovations in the field. McCoy's work was so impactful that it earned him a lasting legacy, culminating in the establishment of the Elijah J. McCoy Midwest Regional Patent Office in Detroit, Michigan, in 2012.
