Éliphas Lévi

Éliphas Lévi Zahed, originally named Alphonse Louis Constant, was born on February 8, 1810, in France. He began his journey in the ecclesiastical realm, aspiring to a career within the Catholic Church. However, in his mid-twenties, Lévi made a pivotal decision to abandon the priesthood, redirecting his focus towards the mystical arts as a ceremonial magician.

At the age of forty, Lévi emerged as a prominent figure in the world of the occult, sharing his extensive knowledge through the written word. Over his lifetime, he authored more than twenty influential books that delved into magic, Kabbalah, alchemical studies, and various aspects of occultism. His pen name, Éliphas Lévi, cleverly transformed his given names into a Hebrew adaptation, symbolizing his deep connection to esoteric traditions.

Renowned for his original thoughts and writings, Lévi captivated audiences in both Paris and London, particularly among esotericists and artists drawn to romantic and symbolist inspirations. His departure from the Grand Orient de France, a significant Masonic organization, stemmed from his belief that the true meanings of its symbols and rituals had been obscured over time. He famously stated, 'I ceased being a freemason, at once, because the Freemasons, excommunicated by the Pope, did not believe in tolerating Catholicism.'

Lévi's intellectual development was shaped by a myriad of influential figures, including the French monarchist Joseph de Maistre, Paracelsus, Robert Fludd, and the Rosicrucians, among others. His works, particularly 'Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie,' reflect the profound impact of these thinkers on his political, occultic, and literary pursuits.
