Elisabet Ney

Elisabet Ney, born on January twenty-sixth, eighteen thirty-three, was a remarkable German-American sculptor whose artistic journey began in Europe. During the first half of her life, she created striking portraits of notable figures, including Otto von Bismarck, Giuseppe Garibaldi, and King George V of Hanover, establishing herself as a prominent artist of her time.

At the age of thirty-nine, Ney made a significant life change by immigrating to Texas with her husband, Edmund Montgomery. This move marked the beginning of her influential role in the development of the art scene in Texas. Her work during this period included life-size marble sculptures of iconic Texas leaders, such as Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, commissioned for the Texas State Capitol.

Today, a substantial collection of her works is preserved in the Elisabet Ney Museum, which is located in her former home and studio in Austin. Additionally, her art can be found in prestigious locations such as the United States Capitol, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and various collections throughout Germany, showcasing her lasting impact on both American and European art.
