Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun

Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, born on April sixteenth, seventeen fifty-five, was a prominent French painter renowned for her exquisite portraiture during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Often referred to as Madame Le Brun, she carved a niche for herself in the artistic circles of Ancien Régime society, primarily through her celebrated work as the portrait painter for Marie Antoinette.

Her artistic style is a fascinating blend of Rococo and Neoclassical elements. While her subject matter and color palette reflect the opulence of Rococo, her technique aligns with the emerging Neoclassical movement. Vigée Le Brun's talent earned her the admiration of European aristocrats, actors, and writers, leading to her election in art academies across ten cities.

Throughout her illustrious career, she created an impressive total of six hundred sixty portraits and two hundred landscapes. Her works are housed in prestigious institutions, including the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. Esteemed contemporaries, such as Joshua Reynolds, regarded her as one of the greatest portraitists of her era, drawing comparisons to the old Dutch masters.

In her later years, Vigée Le Brun published her memoirs, titled Souvenirs, between eighteen thirty-five and eighteen thirty-seven, with the assistance of her nieces. These memoirs, presented in three volumes, include epistolary elements, personal reflections, and valuable advice for aspiring portraitists, showcasing her enduring legacy in the art world.
