Elitsa Yankova, born on September eighteenth, nineteen ninety-four, is a prominent Bulgarian freestyle wrestler who has made her mark on the international stage. Competing in the forty-eight kilogram category, she represented Bulgaria at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she achieved a remarkable feat by winning a bronze medal. This victory not only highlighted her talent but also marked the first Olympic medal for Bulgaria in the 2016 Games.
Initially, Yankova had aspirations in short-distance running within track and field during her adolescence. However, her path took a significant turn when she transitioned to freestyle wrestling, inspired by her father, Atanas Yankov, a former Greco-Roman wrestler. In two thousand nine, despite not qualifying for the European Championships, she caught the attention of coach Petar Kasabov, who encouraged her to train at the Levski sports club.
Yankova's dedication to the sport paid off when she became a junior world champion in two thousand thirteen, adding to her impressive collection of national titles. Her journey has not been without challenges; in two thousand fifteen, she suffered a serious spinal injury but demonstrated remarkable resilience by recovering and returning to the mat.
Outside of wrestling, Yankova enjoys folk dancing, showcasing her diverse interests. She is also a student at South-West University, balancing her academic pursuits with her athletic career.
