Elizabeth Blackburn

Elizabeth Blackburn, born on November twenty-sixth, nineteen forty-eight, is a distinguished Australian-American biologist and molecular biologist, renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to the field of biochemistry. As a former president of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, she has played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of cellular biology.

In nineteen eighty-four, Blackburn made a significant scientific breakthrough by co-discovering telomerase, the enzyme responsible for replenishing telomeres, alongside her colleague Carol W. Greider. This monumental work earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in two thousand nine, an honor she shared with Greider and Jack W. Szostak, marking her as the first Australian woman to receive this prestigious award.
