Elizabeth Freeman

Elizabeth Freeman, also known as Mumbet, was born around the year seventeen forty-four and became a pivotal figure in the fight for freedom in Massachusetts. As one of the first enslaved individuals to challenge her bondage legally, Freeman's courage and determination led her to file a groundbreaking freedom suit against her owner, which would change the course of history.

In seventeen eighty-one, Freeman's case, Brom and Bett v. Ashley, was brought before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The court ruled in her favor, declaring that slavery was incompatible with the newly adopted Constitution of Massachusetts.
