Elizabeth Gurley Flynn

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, born on August seventh, nineteen hundred, was a prominent American labor leader and feminist whose activism spanned several decades. She began her career as an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World, also known as the IWW or the Wobblies, where she passionately fought for workers' rights and social justice.

During World War I, Flynn founded the Workers Defense Union, advocating for individuals arrested under the Espionage Act while simultaneously championing labor causes. Her commitment to civil liberties led her to co-found the American Civil Liberties Union in nineteen twenty, a significant milestone in her lifelong dedication to free speech and human rights.

In nineteen thirty-six, Flynn joined the Communist Party USA during the Popular Front period, quickly becoming one of its most recognized leaders. However, her political affiliations led to controversy; in nineteen forty, the ACLU expelled her from its executive committee due to her Communist ties, despite her longstanding advocacy for free speech.

Flynn made history in nineteen sixty-one when she was elected as the first woman chair of the Communist Party. After her passport was revoked because of her Party membership, she successfully appealed for its reinstatement. Her life came to a close during a visit to the Soviet Union, where she was honored with a state funeral attended by over twenty-five thousand people in Red Square.
