Elizabeth Holmes

Elizabeth Holmes, born on February 3, 1984, is an American businessperson known for her role as a biotechnology entrepreneur and the founder of Theranos. Her company gained significant attention for claiming to revolutionize blood testing with innovative methods that required only small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick. In 2015, Forbes recognized her as the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in the United States, attributing this status to a valuation of her company at nine billion dollars.

However, the following year marked a turning point as allegations of fraud began to surface regarding Theranos's claims. Investigations revealed serious doubts about the accuracy of the company's technology and whether Holmes had been truthful with investors and regulators. By 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged Holmes and her former chief operating officer, Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani, with raising seven hundred million dollars from investors through fraudulent claims. Holmes settled these charges by paying a five hundred thousand dollar fine and relinquishing her control over Theranos.

Holmes's personal life intertwined with her professional journey, as she maintained a clandestine romantic relationship with Balwani throughout much of Theranos's existence. Employees described a corporate culture marked by secrecy and fear, where dissent was often met with marginalization or termination. After the collapse of Theranos, Holmes began dating hotel heir William 'Billy' Evans, whom she married in 2019. The couple has two children, born in 2021 and 2023.

In June 2018, a federal grand jury indicted Holmes and Balwani on fraud charges. Her trial concluded in January 2022, resulting in her conviction for defrauding investors, while she was acquitted of defrauding patients. Holmes was sentenced to serve eleven and a quarter years at Federal Prison Camp, Bryan, starting on May 30, 2023, and was ordered to pay four hundred fifty-two million dollars in restitution to the victims of her fraud. The credibility of Theranos was significantly bolstered by Holmes's ability to connect with influential figures, including former U.S. cabinet officials such as Henry Kissinger and Betsy DeVos.
