Elizabeth of Bosnia

Elizabeth of Bosnia, born in the year 1339, was a formidable queen regnant whose influence spanned across Hungary, Croatia, and Poland. As the daughter of Ban Stephen II of Bosnia, she ascended to the throne of Hungary upon her marriage to King Louis I the Great in 1353. This union not only solidified her royal status but also marked the beginning of her significant political journey.

In 1370, Elizabeth gave birth to her long-anticipated heir, Catherine, and subsequently became Queen of Poland when Louis ascended the Polish throne. The couple welcomed two more daughters, Mary and Hedwig, although tragedy struck with the death of Catherine in 1378. Initially, Elizabeth's role was that of a consort with limited influence, but she soon began to cultivate a circle of loyal noblemen, including her favorite, Nicholas I Garai, which would prove crucial in her later endeavors.

Following the death of her husband in 1382, Elizabeth took on the mantle of regent for her daughter Mary. However, her regency was fraught with challenges, including rebellions led by John Horvat and John of Palisna, who sought to exploit the instability of Mary's reign. In a dramatic turn of events, Elizabeth orchestrated the assassination of King Charles III of Naples, who had been invited to depose Mary, just two months after his coronation in February 1386.

Despite her efforts to restore stability and secure the throne for her daughter, Elizabeth's reign was cut short when she was captured and ultimately strangled by her enemies. Nevertheless, her legacy endured through her daughter, who remained on the throne, a testament to Elizabeth's indomitable spirit and political acumen.
