Elkanah Billings

Elkanah Billings, often celebrated as Canada's first paleontologist, was born on May fifth, eighteen twenty, on a farm by the Rideau River near Bytown, now known as Billings Estate. He was the son of Lamira Dow and Braddish Billings and grew up in a family that included an older sister, Sabra, and an older brother, Maj Braddish Billings Jr., who was an architect and participated in the North-West Rebellion. His younger siblings were Samuel, Sarah, affectionately known as Sally, and Charles.

Initially educated in law, Billings was called to the Canadian bar in eighteen forty-five. His legal career flourished until eighteen fifty-seven, when he transitioned to a groundbreaking role as the first paleontologist for the Geological Survey of Canada. In eighteen fifty-six, he founded the journal Canadian Naturalist (and Geologist), contributing significantly to the field of natural history.

Throughout his career, Billings made remarkable contributions to paleontology, identifying one thousand sixty-five new species and sixty-one new genera. Among his notable discoveries was Aspidella, recognized as the first documented fossil of the Ediacaran biota, marking a significant milestone in the study of ancient life.

In eighteen forty-five, he married Helen Walker Wilson, but the couple remained childless. Billings' legacy as a pioneering figure in paleontology continues to resonate, reflecting his dedication to the exploration of Canada's natural history.
