Grasso's political journey began with her involvement in the League of Women Voters and as a Democratic speechwriter. Her career took off when she was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in nineteen fifty-two, where she became the first female floor leader in nineteen fifty-five. She continued to break barriers by serving as Secretary of the State of Connecticut from nineteen fifty-eight until nineteen seventy-one.

In nineteen seventy-one, Grasso transitioned to national politics, serving two terms in the United States House of Representatives until nineteen seventy-five. Her election as governor in nineteen seventy-four marked a significant milestone, as she was not only the first woman to hold the position in Connecticut but also the fourth woman to be elected governor of any U.S. state. Notably, she was the first female governor who was not the spouse or widow of a former governor.
