Ellen Ochoa

Ellen Ochoa, born on May tenth, nineteen fifty-eight, is a distinguished American engineer and former astronaut who made history as the first Latina to travel to space. Her groundbreaking journey took place in nineteen ninety-three when she participated in a nine-day mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, marking a significant milestone in the representation of women and Latinas in the field of space exploration.

In addition to her remarkable achievements as an astronaut, Ochoa served as the director of the Johnson Space Center, a position she assumed following the retirement of Michael Coats on December thirty-first, two thousand twelve. This appointment made her the first Latina and the second female director in the center's history, further solidifying her legacy in the aerospace community.
