Ellen Roosevelt

Ellen Roosevelt, born on August twentieth, eighteen sixty-eight, was a prominent American tennis player who made her mark in the late nineteenth century. She was the daughter of John Aspinwall Roosevelt, an estate proprietor, and Ellen Murray Crosby. Ellen's journey into the world of tennis began in eighteen seventy-nine when her father installed a tennis court at their family mansion, where she started playing alongside her sister, Grace.

In eighteen ninety, Ellen achieved a significant milestone by winning the women's singles title at the U.S. Championships, triumphing over the reigning champion Bertha Townsend in a decisive final match that concluded in two sets. That same year, she and Grace made history by becoming the first pair of sisters to win the U.S. Championships doubles title, a record that stood until the Williams sisters matched their achievement in nineteen ninety-nine.

Ellen's prowess on the court continued to shine as she claimed the mixed doubles title at the eighteen ninety-three U.S. Championships alongside Oliver Campbell. Additionally, she showcased her talent by winning the Staten Island Ladies Club Open in eighteen ninety, further solidifying her status in the sport.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Ellen Roosevelt was also a first cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her contributions to tennis were recognized posthumously when she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in nineteen seventy-five, ensuring her legacy in the annals of sports history.
