Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven

Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, born on July twelfth, eighteen seventy-four, was a pioneering German avant-garde visual artist and poet. Active in Greenwich Village, New York, from nineteen thirteen to nineteen twenty-three, she became a central figure in the Dada movement, known for her radical self-displays that challenged societal norms and artistic conventions.

Her multifaceted talents spanned sculpting, writing, painting, modeling, and performance art, making her one of the most controversial and radical women artists of her time. Elsa's work was characterized by its provocative nature, which often pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in art and society.

Despite her significant contributions to the art world, much of her poetry remained unpublished during her lifetime. It wasn't until two thousand eleven that her bold and unfiltered writings were compiled and released in the book titled Body Sweats: The Uncensored Writings of Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. The New York Times recognized this collection as one of the notable art books of that year, highlighting her enduring influence on contemporary art.
