Elvīra Ozoliņa, born on October eighth, nineteen thirty-nine, is a celebrated retired Soviet javelin thrower who made her mark in the world of athletics. In nineteen sixty, she achieved a remarkable feat by winning the gold medal at the Olympics, setting an Olympic Record with a throw of fifty-five point ninety-eight meters. Her exceptional talent earned her the prestigious Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
Between nineteen sixty and nineteen sixty-three, Ozoliņa's prowess in javelin throwing was further highlighted as she set three world records. In nineteen sixty-four, she became the first woman to surpass the sixty-meter mark, achieving a distance of sixty-one point thirty-eight meters at the Soviet Championships. However, this impressive result was not ratified as a world record by the IAAF.
Despite her groundbreaking achievements, the nineteen sixty-four Olympic final proved to be a disappointment for Ozoliņa, as she fouled her last four attempts and finished in fifth place. Domestically, she showcased her dominance by winning national titles in nineteen fifty-nine, nineteen sixty-one to sixty-two, nineteen sixty-four, nineteen sixty-six, and nineteen seventy-three.
In nineteen sixty-nine, she married Jānis Lūsis, the Olympic champion in men's javelin throw from nineteen sixty-eight. Their legacy continued through their son, Voldemārs Lūsis, who represented Latvia in the javelin event at the two thousand and four Summer Olympics.
