Elvis Presley, born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, emerged as a transformative figure in American music and culture. Known as the 'King of Rock and Roll', he captivated audiences with his energetic performances and unique blend of musical influences. At the age of thirteen, his family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, where he began his illustrious music career in 1954 at Sun Records, under the guidance of producer Sam Phillips. This collaboration aimed to introduce the vibrant sounds of African-American music to a broader audience.

Presley quickly became a pioneer of rockabilly, a lively fusion of country music and rhythm and blues, alongside his talented band members, including lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined the ensemble, solidifying the classic quartet. His first single with RCA Victor, 'Heartbreak Hotel', released in January 1956, skyrocketed to number one in the United States, marking the beginning of a meteoric rise that saw ten million singles sold within a year.

In addition to his music career, Presley made his film debut in 'Love Me Tender' in November 1956. After being drafted into military service in 1958, he returned to the music scene two years later, producing some of his most commercially successful work. Throughout the 1960s, guided by manager Colonel Tom Parker, he focused on Hollywood films and soundtrack albums, despite mixed critical reception. Iconic films such as 'Jailhouse Rock', 'Blue Hawaii', and 'Viva Las Vegas' became staples of his filmography.

Presley's comeback in 1968 with the acclaimed NBC special 'Elvis' reignited his live performance career, leading to a celebrated Las Vegas residency and numerous profitable tours. In 1973, he made history with 'Aloha from Hawaii', the first concert by a solo artist broadcast globally. Despite his immense success, struggles with substance abuse and health issues plagued him, culminating in his untimely death at the age of forty-two in August 1977 at his Graceland estate.

With an estimated five hundred million records sold worldwide, Elvis Presley remains one of the best-selling music artists in history. His influence spans multiple genres, including pop, country, rock and roll, rockabilly, rhythm and blues, adult contemporary, and gospel. He received three Grammy Awards, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of thirty-six, and was posthumously inducted into numerous music halls of fame. His legacy includes several records, such as the most RIAA-certified gold and platinum albums and the most number-one singles on the UK Singles Chart. In 2018, he was honored posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
