Elżbieta Zawacka

Elżbieta Zawacka, born on March nineteenth, nineteen oh nine, was a remarkable figure in Polish history, known for her multifaceted roles as a historian, university teacher, and military officer. Her contributions to the Polish resistance during World War II are particularly noteworthy, as she served as a courier for the Polish Home Army, navigating perilous routes from Nazi-occupied Poland to the Polish government-in-exile in London.

Often referred to as 'the only woman among the Cichociemni' (Silent Unseen), Zawacka's bravery and dedication were evident as she carried vital letters and documents, ensuring communication between the occupied homeland and the exiled government. Her regular journey took her from Warsaw through Berlin and Sweden, ultimately reaching London, where her efforts were crucial in maintaining the flow of information during a tumultuous time.

In recognition of her exceptional service, Zawacka was promoted to the rank of brigadier general of the Polish Land Forces on May third, two thousand six, by President Lech Kaczyński. This honor made her the second woman, after Maria Wittek, to achieve such a rank in the Polish military, highlighting her significant contributions to both military and academic fields.
