Emily Davies

Emily Davies, born on April twenty-second, eighteen thirty, was a pioneering English feminist and educator who played a crucial role in advancing women's rights, particularly in the realm of higher education. She is best known for founding Girton College, Cambridge, which was the first college in England to offer women a pathway to university education. Her commitment to women's suffrage and educational reform marked her as a significant figure in the feminist movement of her time.

In her early years, Davies was actively involved in the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, where she formed lasting friendships with notable figures such as Barbara Bodichon and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. After relocating to London with her mother in eighteen sixty-two, she took on the role of editor for the English Woman's Journal and became a member of the Langham Place Group, which advocated for women's rights.

Davies co-founded the London Schoolmistresses' Association and the Kensington Society, both of which campaigned for universal suffrage. However, she held the belief that only unmarried women and widows should be granted the vote. In eighteen hundred and four, she resigned from her position at Girton College and later served as secretary for the London branch of the National Society for Women's Suffrage, eventually joining the Conservative and Unionist Women's Franchise Association.

Emily Davies passed away in London at the age of ninety-one. While her views on education were often seen as rigid during her lifetime, contemporary historians have begun to appreciate her contributions in a more favorable light. In two thousand nineteen, a blue plaque was unveiled by Baroness Hale to honor both Davies and Bodichon, commemorating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Girton College.
