Emma of France

Emma of France, born in the year eight hundred ninety-four, was a prominent figure in the Frankish realm, known for her influential role as a queen consort. As the daughter of Robert I of France, she hailed from the esteemed Robertian family, which held significant power in the region. Her familial connections included her younger half-brother, Hugh the Great, who served as the duke of the Franks and count of Paris.

In the year nine hundred twenty-one, Emma entered into matrimony with Duke Raoul of Burgundy. Following his election as king on the thirteenth of July, nine hundred twenty-three, Emma was crowned queen in a ceremony held at the church of St Médard in Soissons. Unlike his predecessor, Odo of France, Raoul retained his duchy, allowing Emma to take on the responsibilities of administering Burgundy during his frequent absences.

Throughout her reign, Emma wielded considerable military and political influence, often acting as a crucial intermediary between her husband and her brother, Hugh. This unique position granted her a blend of power and complexity, as she navigated her conflicting loyalties. Notably, in the year nine hundred thirty-one, she successfully captured the fortress of Avallon, and in nine hundred thirty-three, she led a victorious siege against Château-Thierry, the stronghold of her brother-in-law, Count Herbert II of Vermandois.

Emma's legacy is marked by her groundbreaking status as the first Frankish queen known to have been formally crowned. Her coronation, performed by Archbishop Séulf in Reims, took place shortly after her husband's ascension to the throne, solidifying her place in history as a powerful and influential queen.
