Three distinct organizations oversee the presentation of the Emmys: the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS). The ATAS initiated the Emmy Awards in nineteen forty-nine, originally honoring television productions in the Los Angeles area before expanding to a national scope in the nineteen fifties. Over the subsequent decades, these organizations have broadened the Emmy Awards to encompass various sectors of the television industry.
