Emperor Ai of Jin, born Sima Pi in the year three hundred forty-one, ascended to the throne of the Eastern Jin Dynasty during a tumultuous period in Chinese history. His reign, though brief, was marked by significant political maneuvering, as the real power was wielded by his granduncle, Sima Yu, the Prince of Kuaiji, and the influential general Huan Wen.

Despite his position as emperor, Ai's rule was characterized by a lack of autonomy, with key decisions often made by those around him. This dynamic created a complex political landscape, where the young emperor struggled to assert his authority amidst the ambitions of powerful nobles and military leaders.

Emperor Ai was known for his peculiar obsession with immortality, a fixation that ultimately led to his tragic demise. In the years three hundred sixty-four and three hundred sixty-five, he fell victim to a fatal poisoning, the result of consuming pills provided by magicians who promised him eternal life.
