Emperor Dezong of Tang

Emperor Dezong of Tang, born Li Kuo on May twenty-seventh, seven hundred forty-two, was a significant figure in the history of the Tang dynasty. As the eldest son of Emperor Daizong, he ascended to the throne and ruled for twenty-six years, marking one of the longest reigns in the dynasty's history, surpassed only by his predecessors, Emperor Xuanzong and Emperor Gaozong.

Initially, Emperor Dezong was recognized for his diligence and frugality, striving to reform the governmental finances through the introduction of new tax laws. His early efforts were aimed at stabilizing the empire and addressing the financial challenges of the time.

However, his reign was marred by challenges, particularly his attempts to dismantle the power of regional warlords. These efforts led to significant mismanagement and a series of rebellions that threatened both his rule and the stability of the Tang dynasty. In response to these crises, he adopted a cautious approach towards regional governors, which ultimately allowed warlordism to flourish unchecked.

In the latter part of his reign, Emperor Dezong's paranoia regarding the concentration of power among officials grew. This led him to limit the authority of his chancellors and place undue trust in eunuchs, resulting in a notable rise in their influence within the court.
