Emperor Go-Momozono, born on August fifth in the year seventeen fifty-eight, was the one hundred eighteenth emperor of Japan, recognized in the traditional order of succession. His name, which includes the prefix go- (後), translates to 'later', distinguishing him as 'Later Emperor Momozono' or 'Momozono II', a nod to his father, Emperor Momozono.
Ascending to the throne in seventeen seventy-one during the Edo period, Go-Momozono's reign was marked by a series of natural calamities in seventeen seventy-two. Despite these challenges, the political landscape remained relatively stable, with little conflict involving the Shōgun.
However, as his reign progressed, a significant issue arose concerning succession. With no eligible heir, Go-Momozono faced a critical dilemma. In a desperate move, he adopted a son on his deathbed, ensuring the continuation of the imperial line. Tragically, he passed away in seventeen seventy-nine, just eight years into his reign.
