Emperor Go-Murakami

Emperor Go-Murakami, born Noriyoshi in the year 1328, ascended to the throne as the ninety-seventh emperor of Japan during a tumultuous period known as the Nanboku-chō, characterized by rival courts. His reign commenced on September 18, 1339, and continued until his passing on March 29, 1368, marking a significant chapter in Japanese history.

Throughout his reign, Go-Murakami held court in various locations, including Sumiyoshi in Ōsaka and Yoshino in Nara, reflecting the instability of the era. His leadership was emblematic of the Southern Court, which sought to maintain legitimacy and authority amidst the ongoing conflicts of the time.

The name Go-Murakami pays homage to the tenth-century Emperor Murakami, with the prefix 'go-' meaning 'later' in Japanese. This designation has led to him being referred to as the 'Later Emperor Murakami' or even 'Murakami II' in some historical texts, highlighting the continuity and lineage of imperial rule.
