Emperor Go-Reizei, born on August twenty-eighth in the year one thousand twenty-five, holds the distinguished title of the seventieth emperor of Japan, as recognized in the traditional order of succession. His reign, which lasted from one thousand forty-five to one thousand sixty-eight, marked a significant period in the history of the Japanese imperial lineage.
This eleventh-century sovereign was named in honor of his predecessor, the tenth-century Emperor Reizei. The prefix 'go-' (後) translates to 'later,' leading to his designation as the 'Later Emperor Reizei.' This nomenclature reflects the historical context of his reign and the continuity of the imperial line.
In various historical texts, the term 'go' has also been interpreted as 'the second one.' Consequently, some older sources may refer to him as 'Reizei, the second' or 'Reizei II.' This duality in naming underscores the importance of lineage and the reverence for past emperors in Japanese culture.
