Emperor Qianshao of Han

Emperor Qianshao of Han, born Liu Gong, was the third emperor of the Han dynasty, reigning from 188 BC until his deposition in 184 BC. He was the son of Emperor Hui, born to an unknown minor wife or concubine, and was later adopted by Empress Zhang Yan, the wife of Emperor Hui. His ascent to the throne was heavily influenced by his grandmother, Grand Empress Dowager Lü, who played a significant role in the political landscape of the time.

Upon the death of his father in 188 BC, Qianshao, who had been designated as crown prince, took the throne. However, his reign was overshadowed by the dominance of Grand Empress Dowager Lü, who effectively controlled the government. This power dynamic left Qianshao in a precarious position, as he was often viewed as a mere puppet in the hands of his grandmother.

In a tragic turn of events, Qianshao discovered the truth about his lineage and the fate of his biological mother, who had been executed at the behest of Empress Lü. His ill-fated remark about seeking retribution for his mother's death led to his secret imprisonment. Grand Empress Dowager Lü manipulated the narrative, claiming that Qianshao was gravely ill and incapable of ruling.

Ultimately, the officials, swayed by her influence, complied with her wishes, leading to Qianshao's deposition and subsequent execution. He was succeeded by his brother Liu Yi, who was renamed Liu Hong. Due to his brief and tumultuous reign, Emperor Qianshao is often omitted from the official lists of Han emperors, remembered more as a tragic figure than a ruler.
