Emperor Xianzong of Tang

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Emperor Xianzong of Tang

Emperor Xianzong of Tang, born Li Chun on January first, seven hundred seventy-eight, ascended to the throne in eight hundred five after his father, Emperor Shunzong, yielded the crown. His reign, which lasted until February fourteenth, eight hundred twenty, marked a significant period in the Tang dynasty, characterized by his efforts to restore imperial authority over a fragmented empire.

Upon becoming emperor, Xianzong focused on diminishing the influence of military governors, known as Jiedushi, who had gained substantial power. His initial military campaigns were notably successful, with victories against warlords such as Liu Pi and Yang Huilin in eight hundred six and Li Qi in eight hundred seven. By eight hundred thirteen, he had nearly reunited the empire after the submission of the Weibo Circuit, a key stronghold.

However, his reign was not without challenges. A significant setback occurred in eight hundred thirteen when he failed to defeat military governor Wang Chengzong. Despite this, by eight hundred seventeen, after overcoming Li Shidao and securing Wang's submission, Xianzong managed to reestablish imperial control over the entire empire. This period is often referred to by historians as the Yuanhe Restoration.

While Emperor Xianzong's reign brought a temporary stabilization against the military governors, it also saw the rise of eunuchs' power within the court. Tragically, his life came to a violent end in eight hundred twenty, allegedly at the hands of the eunuch Chen Hongzhi. There were persistent, though unproven, suspicions regarding the involvement of his wife, Consort Guo, and their son, who would later become Emperor Muzong.
