Emperor Zhenzong of Song, born Zhao Heng on December twenty-third, nine hundred sixty-eight, was a pivotal figure in Chinese history as the third emperor of the Song dynasty. His reign, which lasted from nine hundred ninety-seven until his death in one thousand twenty-two, marked a significant period of cultural and political development in China.

Initially named Zhao Dechang, he underwent several name changes throughout his early life, ultimately adopting the name Zhao Heng in nine hundred ninety-five. As the third son of Emperor Taizong, Zhenzong ascended to the throne following his father's legacy, and he was succeeded by his sixth son, Emperor Renzong, at the end of his reign.

Despite facing serious health issues from one thousand twenty onward, Zhenzong maintained his authority over the empire. His illness necessitated that the day-to-day governance of China be managed by his third wife, Empress Liu, showcasing the complexities of leadership during his later years.
