Empress Dowager Ci'an, born on August twelfth, eighteen thirty-seven, was a prominent figure in the Qing dynasty, serving as the empress consort of Yizhu, the Xianfeng Emperor. Her reign as empress consort spanned from eighteen fifty-two until her husband's death in eighteen sixty-one, after which she was honored with the title of Empress Dowager Ci'an.
As one of the most senior members of the imperial family, she shared the role of co-regent with Empress Dowager Cixi during the reigns of two young emperors: Zaichun, the Tongzhi Emperor, and later Zaitian, the Guangxu Emperor. Although she held a position of precedence over Cixi, Ci'an was known for her self-effacing nature, often refraining from political intervention while taking charge of family matters.
Empress Dowager Ci'an was widely regarded as a respectable and composed individual, characterized by her quiet demeanor and kindness towards others. Her relationship with the Xianfeng Emperor was marked by mutual respect. However, historical perspectives on her reign vary, with some historians depicting her as self-indulgent and more focused on the pleasures of life within the Forbidden City than on governance and hard work.
