Empress Meishō

Okiko, posthumously known as Empress Meishō, was born on January 9, 1624, and became the 109th monarch of Japan. Her reign, which lasted from 1629 to 1643, began when she was just five years old, marking a significant moment in Japanese history as she was one of the few women to ascend to the throne.

During her fifteen-year reign, it is widely believed that her father held the reins of power, ruling in her name until she abdicated in favor of her younger half-brother. This unique dynamic highlights the complexities of power and gender in the imperial lineage of Japan.

Empress Meishō was the seventh of eight women to serve as empress regnant, following notable predecessors such as Suiko and Kōken. Her legacy continued through her sole female successor, Go-Sakuramachi, who would carry on the tradition of female leadership in the Japanese imperial family.
