En Vogue, an iconic American girl group, was formed in Oakland, California, in 1989. The original lineup featured the talented singers Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. Their debut album, Born to Sing, released in 1990, catapulted them to fame with the hit single "Hold On," which reached No. 2 on the US Hot 100 chart.
Their follow-up album, Funky Divas, released in 1992, solidified their status in the music industry, achieving top ten rankings in both the US and UK. This album included several chart-topping hits, such as "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)," which also reached No. 2 in the US, along with other popular tracks like "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and "Free Your Mind." In 1996, they released "Don't Let Go (Love)," which became their most successful single, also reaching No. 2 in the US and securing their sixth No. 1 on the US R&B chart.
Throughout their career, En Vogue has undergone several lineup changes. Robinson departed in 1997, just before the release of their third album, EV3, which also made it to the top ten in both the US and UK. Jones left in 2001, and Amanda Cole briefly joined the group. However, Cole's departure in 2003 led to Rhona Bennett joining during the recording of their album Soul Flower. The original members reunited in 2005 for a short period and again in 2009 for their "En Vogue: 20th Anniversary" tour, although Robinson and Jones left once more shortly after.
With over twenty million records sold worldwide, En Vogue has garnered numerous accolades, including seven MTV Video Music Awards, three Soul Train Awards, and two American Music Awards, along with seven Grammy nominations. They are recognized as the first and only female group to receive the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year. Billboard magazine ranked them as the 19th most successful recording artist of the 1990s and the second most successful female group of that decade. In March 2015, they were named the ninth most successful girl group of all time, with two of their singles, "Don't Let Go (Love)" and "Hold On," ranking in Billboard's list of the most successful girl group songs of all time.
