Engelbert Dollfuss

Engelbert Dollfuss, born on October fourth, eighteen ninety-two, was a prominent Austrian politician and lawyer who rose to power during a tumultuous period in Austria's history. He served as Chancellor from nineteen thirty-two until his assassination in nineteen thirty-four, navigating a landscape fraught with political instability and social unrest.

Initially appointed as Minister for Forests and Agriculture, Dollfuss ascended to the role of Federal Chancellor amidst a crisis that saw the Austrian Parliament effectively dissolve. This political upheaval was triggered by the resignation of the presiding officers of the National Council, leading to a significant shift in governance.

During his tenure, Dollfuss took decisive action against the Socialist movement, which culminated in the Austrian Civil War. He also banned the Austrian Nazi Party, solidifying his authoritarian rule through the implementation of the First of May Constitution in nineteen thirty-four.

Tragically, Dollfuss's leadership came to an abrupt end later that same year when he was assassinated in a failed coup attempt orchestrated by Nazi agents. His successor, Kurt Schuschnigg, continued to uphold the regime until the Anschluss with Nazi Germany in nineteen thirty-eight.
