Ereshkigal

Ereshkigal, the formidable goddess of Kur, presides over the realm of the dead in Sumerian mythology. Often associated with the underworld, her name is sometimes used interchangeably with Irkalla, reflecting her dual role as both the land of the dead and its sovereign. In later narratives, she shares her dominion with her husband, Nergal, further intertwining their fates in the mythological tapestry of Mesopotamia.

While Ereshkigal is a prominent figure, she is one of several deities recognized as rulers of the underworld. Her main temple was situated in Kutha, a city historically linked to Nergal. Despite her significance, the scope of her worship was relatively limited, and no personal names incorporating
