Erich Kleiber

Erich Kleiber, born on August fifth, nineteen hundred in Vienna, was a distinguished conductor, composer, and music director. His early musical education took place at the Prague Conservatory, after which he embarked on a traditional path for conductors in German-speaking regions, beginning as a répétiteur in an opera house.

Throughout the years, Kleiber held various prominent positions, including in Darmstadt in nineteen twelve, Barmen-Elberfeld in nineteen nineteen, Düsseldorf in nineteen twenty-one, and Mannheim in nineteen twenty-two. His career reached a significant milestone in nineteen twenty-three when he became the musical director of the Berlin State Opera, where his meticulous musicianship and innovative programming earned him widespread acclaim.

However, following the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany in nineteen thirty-three, Kleiber resigned in protest against their oppressive policies and relocated to Buenos Aires with his family. From that point on, he worked as a freelance conductor, guest conducting in opera houses and concert halls around the world. He played a crucial role in the establishment of The Royal Opera in London, although a later opportunity to return to the Berlin State Opera in the nineteen fifties was thwarted by political circumstances.

Kleiber was particularly celebrated for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Richard Strauss. He was also a strong advocate for modern composers, notably premiering Alban Berg's Wozzeck. His life came to an unexpected end in Zürich at the age of sixty-five.
