Erich Priebke

Erich Priebke, born on July twenty-ninth, nineteen thirteen, was a mid-level commander in the Schutzstaffel (SS) and served in the Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) during Nazi Germany. His role in the infamous Ardeatine massacre on March twenty-fourth, nineteen forty-four, marked a dark chapter in his life, as he was responsible for the execution of three hundred thirty-five Italian civilians in retaliation for a partisan attack that resulted in the deaths of thirty-three members of the German SS Police Regiment Bozen.

Following the conclusion of World War II in Europe, Priebke fled to Argentina, where he lived for nearly fifty years, evading justice for his wartime actions. His past resurfaced in the early nineties when Esteban Buch's book, 'El pintor de la Suiza Argentina,' brought attention to his involvement in the Rome massacre. In nineteen ninety-four, on the fiftieth anniversary of the tragic event, Priebke gave an interview to American ABC News reporter Sam Donaldson, which reignited public outrage and led to his eventual extradition to Italy.

Priebke's trial, which spanned over four years, culminated in a conviction for war crimes in nineteen ninety-six. His life story serves as a chilling reminder of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust and the long-lasting impact of those events on the collective memory of history.
